ST. PATRICK'S DAY

OBJECTIVES

 

  • To learn about St. Patrick’s Day history and traditions.

  • To explore ways of developing language skills through activities related to St. Patrick’s Day.

  • To explore different art techniques and communicative proposals.

 

CONTENTS

  • Origin of St. Patrick’s Day, key vocabulary and how it is celebrated.

  • Resources and ideas to promote English skills in the ESL classroom and to develop creativity.

 

WARM UP


Pass the parcel: Warm up activity. We make a paper ball and wrap more paper layer. Between each layer we put stickers and questions students must answer. We can revise useful vocabulary such as colors, countries, plants, clothes, tales characters...

Song activities: After pre-teaching the main words we listen to the song. We cut out the lyric of the song in paragraphs they must put in order. We read the some and underline key sentences. We can also do a gap filling activity.

ACTIVITIES TO PRACTICE LANGUAGE AND REVISE CONTENT

 

Telegram game: We think of a sentence about and St. Patrick's Day and write only the initial letters. Children must guess the sentence.

​

Race to the board: The class is divided in two groups and form a line. Children come to the board taking turns and write words or sentences related to St. Patrick's Day.

​

Domino of questions and answers: Each children is given a cards with a questions and an answer. All the cards in the class are connected forming a long domino line. Children read their cards, try to answer the question and imagine which could be the question for their answer. 

​

Songs: Learners can watch the song, mime the actions and create a dance. Then they can read the lyric, circle the rhymes and practice pronunciation.

ACTIVITIES TO PRODUCE LANGUAGE

Who is who: Children play in pairs. They choose a leprechaun but they do not tell their partner. The game consist of guessing which leprechaun your partner has chosen by asking yes/no questions.  

 

Writing a minibook about St. Patrick's Day history or main traditions.

Webquest: Research proposal for the big ones.
